Davis Commons

Happy New Year!

There's no better way to start the new year in the blog than to introduce Davis Commons! This area in downtown Davis holds a very special place in my heart. Davis Commons consists of several restaurants, retail and other stores. I will be highlighting several of the stores in later blog posts. The anchor in the area is a Borders bookstore. During the construction phase, many Davis residents were appalled at bringing a chain bookstore into Davis because it might put independent booksellers (like the Avid Reader) out of business. The shopping area was constructed in 1997, and even as a little kid I remember all the controversy surrounding it. But its a good thing this got built because it is a main hangout spot in Davis! Students and workers in the area frequently visit for lunch, and there is plenty of seating and grassy areas for picnics. This is also an important architectural site in Davis, because it is the only shopping area that has the parking lot hidden in the back behind the stores.
