Recap: Making Objects

Just two more classes to catch up on now! I'm skipping over one class last semester because it was pretty boring and we didn't produce much work so there's nothing really blogworthy or even noteworthy from it.

was very excited to finally get to take an elective class because it has been a rare thing in my past two years. And I decided to take a class that I was very excited for and I had wanted to take in the past: object making. But little did I know this was just not a good semester to take it, leading to a pretty unpleasant experience. I'm actually not excited at all to write this post, but won't go into much detail here. Regardless we had a small group of 5 students for a design-build project on our campus. We got a small site on campus and it was our responsibility to put an architectural installation on the site. Needless to say it was a ton of work for only 5 people mostly during the last two weeks of the semester. We ended up building an aluminum installation that was hung between two roofs of the building without touching the ground. And if I've learned anything in architectural school it is that things hanging in the air always take about 10 times longer to install. It was a lot of work and I'm not all that happy with the result but I lost a few weeks of my life to the project. I hope not all architecture is like this.

But the positives are I did make some really good friends in the class and we got to experiment with a lot of materials in the beginning of the semester including fiberglass, resin, plaster, gfrc, aluminum, vacuum formed plastic, metal... Basically you name it I probably used it. It was nice getting to use our fabrication labs on campus and getting to work with my hands but I wish I had produced a better product out of all the time I spent. I did learn a lot of valuable lessons however.
