Aran Islands

Today was the last full day with our tour group so it was really very bittersweet. We did not however have to get on the bus this morning because we took public transportation to the Aran islands.

First we rode on a city bus and then we took a ferry the rest of the way. We were going to rent bicycles, adding to our various transportation methods for the day. This plan was ruined for the day because it was pouring rain when we got there. Big surprise. After being on the island for about 10 minutes we were all completely soaked and decided biking didn't sound like the best idea.

Going to a bar and keeping dry however sounded much, much better. We camped out at a place called the American bar and despite the accents I forgot I was in Ireland for a while. We ate burgers and played pool and stayed inside for as long as we possibly could.

After lunch we took a walk around and went to some small wool shops. We got talked into a bus tour along the way which was a much better option than a bike. The bus took us around the 9 mile long island and we got to see the sites and also get a feel for the culture. The island is fairly self sufficient, growing a lot of potatoes and exporting a lot of cattle to the mainland. They also have the only Gaelic university, which teaches students only in the Irish language. If they get caught speaking English they will get kicked out. So most if the people on the island speak the language and since it's so small the townies all know each other.

They also believe in leprechauns in this island and they build little houses for them. The leprechauns have also been known to walk people home from the bars and steal money.

My favorite part of the tour was seeing the cliffs. Since we didn't get to see the cliffs or mohr this kind of made up for it. This was scarier though because there was absolutely no wall so you could walk up right to the very edge. But they were quite beautiful and I took many photographs.

After our day on the island we took the ferry back home to Galway and spent our last night together as a group by doing a pub crawl. Tomorrow I have to say goodbye to the group and return to Dublin for the last leg of the journey.
